Closet cleanout and gear purchasesMarch 18th, 20261 min read

I recently did a long-overdue clean-out of the gear closet and sold stuff I'd been hanging onto for way too long. The proceeds went towards a warmer jacket (Rab Electron Pro) and sleeping quilt (Katabatic Gear Sawatch), each one aimed at better handling temps below freezing.

Dark Matter on AppleTV+March 10th, 20261 min read

Absolutely loved this show. I read the book several years ago, but didn't remember much from it. As far as I can tell based on breakdowns of the show on YouTube the adaptation followed the book close enough, with some minor deviations here and there.

I hope they don't fall into a writing-trap for season two, and keep it interesting, with some sort of great ending planned.

Tripling my computer monitorsMarch 4th, 20261 min read

Over the holidays I received a "home office" upgrade, and I'm loving it.

Before the "upgrade" I was doing all my work on a laptop: one screen, with constant window and context switching. It technically worked, but it wasn't exactly efficient.

I’m now using a laptop monitor extension that adds two 1080p screens. Having three displays means I can keep apps such as email, chat, or docs open all the time and stay focused in my editor. Less bouncing around, more actual coding.

A fresh backpacking seasonFebruary 24th, 20261 min read

A new year means a new three-season backpacking window, and I'm very ready for that.

I'm hoping to squeeze in a handful of overnight trips this spring, mostly around Wisconsin and Central Illinois. Nothing too wild, just getting back out there and shaking off the rust.

The AppleTV+ show "See"February 12th, 20261 min read

Premise: a genetic defect has caused the entire human population to go blind for generations, but sight is slowly returning to the world.

An interesting concept that started strong, but like most shows these days focused on a single story across multiple episodes, and seasons, it lost its strength and lost me along the way. I finally finished watching it the other day though, just for the sake of being a completionist.

Accessibility stress is realFebruary 5th, 20261 min read

Building a website has a lot of moving parts: design, planning, choosing a tech stack, implementing everything, and then fixing the things that inevitably break when implementing said design.

What often gets overlooked is accessibility. It’s frequently treated as a final checklist item instead of something that should be baked in from the start. And that’s a mistake; it’s way harder to retrofit accessibility than it is to design with it in mind from day one.

It’s its own challenge entirely, and one that deserves way more attention earlier in the process.

From more to lessJanuary 17th, 20261 min read

I've redesigned this website more times than I can count, with each iteration feeling a bit...off. So, I decided to try something different.

Rather than working myself up into a design frenzy trying to fill the entire screen with an evenly-spaced layout while at the same time wondering if I'm using the correct amount of negative space, or animating the necessary elements (and of course agonizing over multiple screen sizes), I decided to keep this design simple, and light.

Less is more.
