Before heading into the Alps for the Tour du Mont Blanc we took some time to explore the city of Geneva, from breakfast along the Rhone river to exploring Old Town and the botanical gardens.
Located where the lake meets the Rhône River, and originally built as a safety valve for a local hydraulic plant, the Jet d'Eau is a massive plume of water that shoots 450 feet into the air, visible from nearly anywhere in the city, making it a majestic centerpiece. It's even more incredible looking in person than the picture. I captured this shot of it from the spires of the Saint-Pierre cathedral.
From the outside the cathedral looks like a collection of different eras with massive columns seemingly glued onto a much older rugged-looking body. On the inside the interior was strikingly stark-looking with no ornate altars, just rows of plain wooden benches. However, there is one exception and that's the Chapel near the exit. It's a 'riot of color' with vibrant Gothic paintings and intricate carvings that felt like a secret treasure hidden in the grey stone...read more.
Geneva has a great, free, botanic garden a short bus ride away from the bustling downtown area. We spent a couple of hours wandering its paths as they wove their way through differently themed areas, seeing all of the different types of flora they were cultivating...read more.
